Kharkov

In 2004 Kharkov celebrated its 350's birthday. During these years, the city has grown up and gained in strength. The Kharkov of today is a powerful industrial, cultural, and research center of Ukraine, and also the largest transport nodal point of the state.

The city of Kharkov is the historical capital of Ukraine situated in the North-Eastern part of the country on the boundary of two landscape areas, wooded steppe and steppe, on the junction of the Udy and Lopan rivers that flow into the Seversky Donets.

Its population is more than 2 million citizens. It is a hero-city with over 80 higher education establishments. Among them are the well-known in all parts of the world The Kharkov Aviation Institute, The Kharkov Vasyl Krazin National University, The University of Radioelectronics (also known as KHIRE), and many others. Each year, about 20,000 new specialists complete their degrees in all the higher education establishments of Kharkov.

Kharkov is one of the largest, if not simply the largest, industrial and cultural centers of Ukraine. There are more than 60 research institutes, more than 170 schools of general education, about 150 teaching and educational centers and advanced secondary education establishments in the city of Kharkov. Kharkov also counts 49 cultural establishments and centers, 5 museums being among them, the city picture-gallery, 6 large theaters. There are over 80 libraries in the city! The above-mentioned figures are to say that "Kharkov means intelligence!"

Kharkov is a place, where the lives of many famous writers, artists, actors, thinkers, such as Vernadsky and Skovoroda, are interconnected.

Kharkov is the industrial center of Ukraine. The Malyshev plant, The Kharkov Aircraft Works, KHARTRON (The Automatic Control Systems Development Plant) are well-known not only in Ukraine, but also far beyond the bounds of the country.
